Mayor’s welcome

Dear fellow citizens,

Diversity is an integral part of our municipality’s DNA. As of February 2024, 8872 people from no fewer than 107 different countries call Walferdange their home and the trend is rising. This internationality enriches our life together in many ways.

But what else characterises Walferdange? On the one hand, a wealth of businesses, services, initiatives and a lively club life: we are currently home to over 90 different clubs and associations. Walferdange is also known beyond its borders an even Luxembourg for a well-known major event: the Walfer Bicherdeeg. The book fair attracts thousands of visitors every year. And we do our utmost we can to organise it as sustainably as possible (for more information visit www.bicherdeeg.lu).

In our municipality, we also benefit from a variety of important infrastructures: In addition to the Walfer Schoul, which is divided into the three different elementary schools, there are also the Maisons Relais in Bereldange, Helmsange and Walferdange where school children are adequately looked after. The children can also let off steam on a total of 14 different playgrounds. In terms of sports, Walferdange has an inter-municipal swimming pool (PIDAL), fitness trails, a cardio and outdoor fitness park and two playgrounds with play equipment for people with reduced mobility. There are also two dog play areas in the municipality.

As far as mobility is concerned, here in Walferdange we prioritise sustainability and social compatibility. People can reach their destinations within and outside the municipality quickly by bus and train; there is also an extensive network of cycle and pedestrian paths. Residents can also benefit from the services of the Nightrider and the Walfy flexibus. Last but not least, Walferdange is connected to the Flex car-sharing network and – as of late 2023 – to the City of Luxembourg’s vel’OH! network.

And finally, what would Walferdange be without its tourist attractions (more information at www.walfer.lu) and its specific geographical location. After all, the municipality has an urban feel and is ideally located to get to the capital quickly but at the same time we can take advantage of our beautiful and diverse landscapes and take a dip in nature – just think of the Gréngewald. The Sonnebierg nature reserve provides a habitat for a total of 150 different plant species. We are restoring and preserving the natural habitats of our village with renaturalisation projects, including the restoration of the river Alzette. We are also involved in species conservation with beehives, insect hotels and flower meadows. Our endeavours are all aimed at making Walferdange a community in which our residents enjoy living – and we can only achieve this with the active involvement of all our citizens. Do you have any suggestions or ideas that you would like to share with us? Then please contact us by e-mail (secretariat@walfer.lu).

Your mayor,
François Sauber
