Competition for the most beautiful natural front garden – take part!

The municipality of Walferdingen cordially invites its citizens to take part in the ‘Schéinsten naturnoe Virgäertchen’ competition! The aim of the initiative is to promote biodiversity and at the same time to sustainably beautify our municipality.
Closing date and conditions of participation
The competition starts on 1st April and runs until 30th November. Interested parties can register by 31st March by sending the registration form either by email to ecologie@walfer.lu or by post to B.P. 1, L-7201 Walferdange.
All citizens whose green spaces are visible from the street are eligible to participate. This includes planted areas in the front garden, house entrances, side passages, terraces, window sills and balconies in front of the house.
Evaluation criteria: Aesthetics and biodiversity
The jury will judge the submitted front gardens in two categories:
Aesthetics – How attractively and harmoniously does the front garden blend in with its surroundings?
Biodiversity – What measures have been taken to promote biodiversity?
In the biodiversity category, the jury pays particular attention to
- The use of native or climate-adapted plants
- The use of natural materials such as wood and stone instead of plastic
- Nature-oriented maintenance, e.g. by using perennials instead of annual ornamental plants
- The protection of birds (no disturbance during breeding) by keeping trees and hedges only
- The presence of habitats for wildlife, such as dry-stone walls, flower meadows or nesting boxes
Three visits by the jury
To assess the development of the front gardens over the course of the year, they are visited by the jury three times: in spring, summer and autumn. At the end of the competition, the ten best front gardens will be honoured. There are prizes from 50 to 300 euros to be won!
