REDUCING THE USE OF DE-ICING SALT TO PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT
White winter service
Following the information evening on 8th October 2024, the municipality of Walferdange is launching a pilot project this winter called “White Winter Service”. The aim is to reduce the use of de-icing salt and to avoid the use of alternatives. Selected streets will therefore no longer be salted.
The choice is limited to municipal streets with a gentle gradient and local traffic. The streets concerned are named and pictured in orange on the maps below. For safety reasons, street junctions (entrances/exits marked in green) that cross busy streets will continue to be salted. State streets, steep streets, entrances to public buildings, bus stops and busy junctions will not be affected by the white winter service.
We would like to point out that our services will clear snow without salt from a snowfall of 10 cm. However, in the event of black ice or freezing rain, salting will continue.
This pilot project only concerns streets. Pavements must always be cleared of snow in accordance with police regulations. However, it is recommended that you use environmentally friendly alternatives to road salt. For example, sand or gravel with the ‘Der Blaue Engel’ eco-label. Cycle paths and footpaths will continue to be salted.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in this pilot project.
