A new connection between Walferdange and Bereldange

The bridge that runs over the Uelzecht river and leads from Place de la Mairie to the Cité Grand-Duc Jean will be renewed. Starting on January 9th, the old bridge will be demolished, and a new one will be built. This is necessary because the current wooden bridge is no longer safe to use after 24 years. The wood has started to rot, which leads to structural problems.

During the municipal election campaign in 1966, many citizens had advocated for the construction of a footbridge between Walferdange and Bereldange. The newly elected municipal council took this into consideration and voted the construction of the footbridge by the end of the 1960s.

In 1970, a bridge made of metal and concrete was inaugurated.

After 30 years in use, the bridge had to be replaced. The current wooden construction was built in 2000 with a canopy roof added a little later. This metal reinforcement was necessary for the bridge’s statics and helped to maintain its strength.

The future bridge will be a modern construction in metal and concrete, with wooden elements. Its surface will be slip-resistant so pedestrians and bicycles can cross the bridge safely. With a width of three meters, the footbridge will also be a little wider so traffic on the bridge will be improved.

The new bridge is expected to be completed by the beginning of May, depending on the meteorological conditions.
