Starting in 1968, an underground geodynamics laboratory was set up in Walferdange in a side gallery of the gypsum mine, 700m from the entrance to the mine at a geological depth of 80m. The main advantages of this location are especially the absence of water, reduced humidity, stable temperature to the 1/100 of a degree Celsius and, the calm and the suitable micro-seismic action. From the start, studies from the geodynamics and seismological laboratory in Walferdange have been carried out from the beginning in close collaboration with the Royal Observatory of Belgium in Brussels. The main geodynamic phenomena studied by the laboratory are terrestrial tides and earthquakes.
